Caesar Salad

Read a short passage about how a salad with romaine lettuce, croutons, and dressing became a classic starter.

1.1

Caesar salad is a popular dish that many people enjoy. It is made with simple ingredients like lettuce, small pieces of toasted bread called croutons, Parmesan cheese, lemon juice, olive oil, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and black pepper. The salad is famous for its creamy dressing and crunchy croutons.

1.2

The salad has an interesting history. It was made in 1924 by "Caesar Cardini," an Italian chef who had a restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. One busy weekend, he ran out of many ingredients. He then used what he had left to create a new salad. People liked it so much that they named it "Caesar salad" because of him.

1.3

Making Caesar salad is easy. You start by tearing lettuce into pieces. Then you add croutons and sprinkle some Parmesan cheese on top. For the dressing, you mix lemon juice, olive oil, a bit of egg, Worcestershire sauce, crushed garlic, and black pepper. Put this on the lettuce, add the croutons and cheese, and mix everything together.

1.6

Fun fact : The original idea was to keep the lettuce leaves whole, and people had to use their hands to eat! The salad was designed to be eaten by hand, not with a fork and knife.
