A script is a written system used to represent the spoken language of a particular group or culture. It consists of characters, symbols, or glyphs that correspond to sounds, words, or ideas in that language. For example, the Latin script is used for English and many other languages, where letters like A, B, and C represent specific sounds. In contrast, the Arabic script is written from right to left and has different letters that represent sounds in the Arabic language. Scripts play a crucial role in literacy and communication, allowing people to read, write, and preserve their languages and cultures in a tangible form.

A defective script is a writing system that lacks characters or symbols to represent all the sounds or phonemes of a language. This limitation means that certain sounds cannot be accurately represented, leading to potential gaps in written communication. For example, in the Latin script used for English, there is no distinct character for the sound /ŋ/, which appears in words like "sing." Instead, it is represented by the combination of letters "ng." Defective scripts can create challenges for literacy and learning, as they may not fully capture the phonetic diversity of a language, leading to variations in spelling and pronunciation.

Phonographic writing is a system of writing where symbols or characters represent individual sounds or phonemes of a language. This type of writing focuses on the sounds of speech rather than the meanings of words, allowing for a more direct representation of spoken language. An example of phonographic writing is the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which provides a standardized set of symbols to represent the sounds of all spoken languages. Phonographic writing is significant in linguistics because it helps illustrate the relationship between sounds and their written forms, enhancing the understanding of pronunciation and phonetics.

A syllabary is a writing system in which each character represents a syllable rather than an individual sound or letter. In a syllabary, symbols denote syllables, which can consist of a consonant followed by a vowel, or sometimes just a vowel alone. For example, the Japanese writing systems of Hiragana and Katakana are syllabaries, with characters representing specific syllables such as "ka," "ki," and "ku." Syllabaries are significant in linguistics because they offer a different approach to representing language in writing, focusing on the syllable as the basic unit of sound rather than the individual phoneme or letter.

A featural writing system is a type of writing that represents the features of sounds, specifically phonemes, through symbols. In this system, each symbol corresponds to specific articulatory characteristics of the sounds, such as place or manner of articulation. For example, in the Hangul writing system used for Korean, consonants are designed to visually represent the shape of the mouth or the position of the articulators when producing the sounds. The symbol for the consonant "ㄱ" (g) resembles the shape of the tongue at the back of the mouth. Featural writing systems are significant because they provide a more systematic approach to representing language, making it easier for learners to understand how sounds are formed and pronounced.
