Over time, it has evolved into a figurative expression, signifying the loss of communication or contact with a person, group, or a specific situation. This idiom can be traced back to the idea that when people or objects physically move apart, they are no longer in direct contact or close proximity, which is now used metaphorically to describe a lack of ongoing interaction or connection.
