The word "hamburger" comes from Hamburg, a city in Germany. A long time ago, people there made a meal with ground beef and called it a Hamburg steak. Some Germans brought this food idea to the United States when they moved there.
In the United States, hamburgers became very popular. They were easy to make and they tasted good. People started to sell them at food stands and small shops. One of the first times they sold hamburgers was at an event in Connecticut in 1900.
Fast food restaurants made hamburgers even more popular. These restaurants could make hamburgers quickly and sell them for a low price. Now, people all over the world eat hamburgers.
