Coffee

Read a short passage about how roasted beans turned into a hot, popular drink enjoyed by people everywhere.

1.1

Coffee is a popular drink all over the world. It is made from coffee beans. These beans come from the coffee plant's fruit. The plant grows well in warm and rainy places.

1.2

Coffee started in Ethiopia, Africa. A story says a goat herder named Kaldi saw his goats very active after eating berries from a certain tree. Kaldi tried these berries too and felt awake. This discovery spread to other places. By the 1500s, people in the Middle East were also enjoying coffee.

1.3

To make coffee, people first need to pick the fruit from the coffee plants. Inside the fruit, there are beans. These beans are taken out and dried. After drying, the beans are roasted. Roasting makes the beans turn brown and smell good.

1.4

After roasting, the coffee beans are ground into a fine powder. This powder is used to brew coffee. People usually use hot water to make coffee. They pour the hot water over the ground beans and then the water becomes coffee.

1.5

People drink coffee in many ways. Some like it black, which means without milk or sugar. Others add milk, cream, or sugar to their coffee. There are also many different types of coffee drinks, like espresso, cappuccino, and latte.

1.6

Coffee is not just for drinking. Many people enjoy going to coffee shops. These shops are nice places to meet friends, read books, or work on laptops.

1.7

Fun fact : Coffee is the second most traded thing in the world after oil. This shows how much people love coffee.
