Caesar Salad
Read a short passage about how a salad with romaine lettuce, croutons, and dressing became a classic starter.
Caesar salad is a popular dish that many people enjoy. It is made with simple ingredients like lettuce, small pieces of toasted bread called croutons, Parmesan cheese, lemon juice, olive oil, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and black pepper. The salad is known for its creamy dressing and crunchy croutons.
The salad has an interesting history. It was made in 1924 by Caesar Cardini, an Italian chef who had a restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. One busy weekend, he ran out of many ingredients. He then used what he had left to create a new salad. People liked it so much that they named it "Caesar salad" after him.
Making Caesar salad is easy. You start by tearing lettuce into pieces. Then you add croutons and sprinkle some Parmesan cheese on top. For the dressing, you mix lemon juice, olive oil, a bit of egg, Worcestershire sauce, crushed garlic, and black pepper. Pour this over the lettuce, add the croutons and cheese, and toss everything together.
Many enjoy Caesar salad because it is fresh and flavorful. It is often eaten as an appetizer or a light main dish. Some people add chicken, shrimp, or fish to make it more filling.
Caesar salad is famous all around the world. You can find it in many restaurants, and it is also easy to make at home.
Fun fact : The original recipe did not have anchovies. Instead, Caesar Cardini used Worcestershire sauce, which has anchovies in it. This gave the salad a fishy taste without using anchovies directly. Later, many chefs started adding anchovies to the recipe to make the flavor stronger.
