Sprinting

Read a short passage about a race where every second counts as runners dash at full speed to reach the finish line.

1.1

Sprinting is a type of running. It is very fast and covers a short distance. People race in sprints. These races are 100 meters, 200 meters, or 400 meters long. Sprinting is in the Olympic Games and other big sports events.

1.2

Sprinting has a long history. People have always liked to see who can run the fastest. In ancient Greece, sprinting was in the first Olympic Games around 776 BC. The runners did not have special shoes or tracks. They ran on dirt paths. Today, we have modern tracks and special shoes.

1.3

Sprinting needs a lot of practice. Runners must be strong and quick. They also need good technique. This means they must move their legs and arms the right way. Sprinting starts with a push from the starting blocks. This helps the runner get a good start. The runner then runs as fast as possible to the finish line.

1.4

Many famous athletes are sprinters. Usain Bolt from Jamaica is very famous. He holds the world record for the 100-meter and 200-meter races. Bolt is very fast and has won many gold medals in the Olympics. Other famous sprinters are Carl Lewis and Florence Griffith-Joyner from the USA. They also set records and won many medals.

1.5

Sprinting is not just for professional athletes. Many people sprint for fun or exercise. It is a good way to stay fit and healthy. Schools often have sprint races on sports days. Kids like running fast and racing with their friends.

1.6

Fun fact : Cheetahs are the fastest land animals. They can run up to 70 miles per hour. This is much faster than any human can run. Usain Bolt, the fastest human, can run about 28 miles per hour. This shows how amazing cheetahs are at sprinting!
