Tennis

Read a short passage about a fast-paced game where players use rackets to hit a ball over a net and score points.

1.1

Tennis is a popular sport. People play tennis for fun and in competitions. The game is played on a court with a net in the middle. Players use a racket to hit a ball over the net. The goal is to make the ball land on the other player’s side without them hitting it back.

1.2

Tennis has a long history. It started in France many years ago. At first, people hit the ball with their hands. Later, they used rackets. The game we know today began in England in the 1800s. The first big tennis match at Wimbledon was in 1877.

1.3

You can play tennis with two players (singles) or four players (doubles). The players stand on opposite sides of the net. They take turns hitting the ball. If the ball goes outside the lines, the player loses a point. Tennis can be played on grass, clay, or hard courts. Each type of court is different.

Many famous tennis players are very good. Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic are some of the best. They have won many matches and are well known. They inspire many people to play tennis.

The rules of tennis are easy. Players hit the ball over the net. The ball must land on the other player’s side. The player who gets the most points wins the game. Matches usually have three or five sets.

Tennis is also in the Olympics. It started in the Olympics in 1896. It stopped for a while but came back in 1988. Now, players from many countries try to win gold medals in the Olympics.

Fun fact : The longest tennis match ever was 11 hours and 5 minutes long. It was played over three days at Wimbledon in 2010. The players were John Isner and Nicolas Mahut. John Isner won the match.
