People started climbing rocks a long time ago. The sport began in the late 1800s. Early climbers used simple ropes and had to be very careful. In the 1950s and 1960s, better tools made climbing safer and more popular.
There are different types of rock climbing. Bouldering is climbing short, hard routes without ropes. Climbers use mats to stay safe if they fall. Sport climbing uses ropes and bolts fixed in the rock. Trad climbing uses gear that can be put in and removed from rock cracks.

Fun fact : Rock climbing became an Olympic sport in 2020. The first competition was in Tokyo, Japan. It had speed climbing, bouldering, and lead climbing. This helped make the sport even more popular worldwide.
