Ambulance
Read a short passage about a special vehicle used to take sick or injured people to the hospital quickly.
An ambulance is a special vehicle that takes sick or hurt people to the hospital. The ambulance is very important because it can save lives by getting people to the hospital quickly. Inside an ambulance, there is medical equipment and medicine to help people before they reach the hospital.
The first ambulance was made in the late 1800s. At that time, it was not as fast as today’s ambulances. The early ambulances were pulled by horses. They were used mostly during wars to help soldiers who were hurt. As technology improved, motorized ambulances became common in the 1900s. Today, ambulances are faster, safer, and have more advanced tools.
Ambulances come in different types. Some are cars or vans, while others can be helicopters or boats. Helicopter ambulances are very useful in hard-to-reach places like mountains or during big accidents.
The sound you hear from an ambulance is called a siren. This loud noise tells other cars to move aside so the ambulance can pass quickly. Ambulances are often painted with bright colors and have flashing lights to make them easy to spot.
In some countries, you can call for an ambulance by dialing a special number, like 112 or 911. Once you call, trained people, called paramedics, arrive quickly to help.
Fun fact : The word "ambulance" comes from the Latin word "ambulare," which means "to walk or move." Long ago, ambulances were simply carts that moved sick people from place to place.
