Usage of Stressed Pronouns

a) After prepositions

Stressed pronouns are used after prepositions such as avec, pour, chez, sans, devant, sur:

Example

C'est pour moi.

It's for me.

Elle parle de lui.

She is talking about him.

Je vais chez toi.

I'm going to your place.

Nous partons sans eux.

We're leaving without them.

Tip!

Subject pronouns cannot be used after prepositions.

b) For emphasis

Stressed pronouns can emphasize or contrast someone, often placed at the start or end of a sentence:

Example

Moi, je préfÚre le chocolat.

Me, I prefer chocolate.

Here, the stressed pronoun is used to stress the subject in comparison or contrast.

Lui, il travaille beaucoup.

Him, he works a lot.

Tu veux venir ? – Pas moi !

You want to come? – Not me!

Elle aime le café, mais pas toi.

She likes coffee, but not you.

c) After c'est / ce sont

When identifying or emphasizing people, French uses stressed pronouns. You cannot use subject pronouns in this position. Here are the examples:

Example

C'est moi.

It's me.

Ce sont eux.

It's them.

C'était elle.

It was her.

d) With imperative + object

After imperative verbs, stressed pronouns are used to clarify or emphasize the object:

Example

Parle Ă  moi !

Talk to me!

Écoute nous !

Listen to us!

Pense Ă  eux.

Think of them.

Warning!

soi is special—it refers to oneself in general, not a specific person. For example:

Example

Chacun pour soi.

Each one for oneself.
