What Are Interrogative Adverbs in French?

Interrogative adverbs (Les adverbes interrogatifs) are used to ask questions about time, place, manner, quantity, and reason. Unlike interrogative pronouns (qui, que), they do not replace a noun — they modify the verb.

Où (Where)

It is used to ask about location or destination.

Comment (How)

It is used for manner, method, or state. Look at the examples below:

Combien (How much / many)

It is used for quantity. For example:

Warning!

Always use combien de, not combien des. They are invariable: no plural, no feminine changes.

It is used to ask about reason or cause. For example:

Inversion (formal): Adverb + verb + subject
