Subjunctive II For Intermediate learners
What is Subjunctive II?
The Subjunctive (Konjunktiv) II is a grammatical mood in German that is mostly used for talking about hypothetical scenarios and things that are unreal or have not happened. This mood is also used for asking for a favor or politely making a request.
Usage
The subjunctive II can be used in the following situations:
Hypothetical Situations (Conditional II)
Wishes
Suggestion
Advice
Report Speech
Hypothetical Situations (Conditional II)
[Wenn + Subjunctive II + Subjunctive II]
There are two ways to form Subjunctive II for the main clause. You can directly conjugate the verb in Subjunctive II or use werden (Subjunctive II) + infinitive in order to express a hypothetical scenario. The second one is mostly used in spoken German and is not preferred in formal writings.
Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, kaufte ich ein großes Haus.
If I had more money, I would buy a big house.
Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, würde ich ein großes Haus kaufen.
If I had more money, I would buy a big house.
Wishes
You can use Subjunctive II to talk about things that you dream about, or you wish were true. They usually start with "Ich wünschte..." (I wish...). You can use the Subjunctive II form of the verb or werden (Subjunctive II) + infinitive for the second part of it.
Ich wünschte, ich hätte ein Boot.
I wish I had a boat.
Ich wünschte, es würde schneien.
I wish it would snow.
Suggestion
The Subjunctive II form can soften a request or statement and therefore make it polite. Usually the subjunctive II forms of können and haben are used for this usage, but würden is also common.
Könntest du mir bitte helfen?
Could you please help me?
Würden Sie mir bitte Ihre E-Mail-Adresse geben?
Would you please give me your email address?
Würden Sie bitte das Fenster schließen?
Would you please close the window?
Advice
In order to give advice without sounding too harsh you can use the Subjunctive II form of "sollen".
Du solltest mehr Obst essen.
You should eat more fruit.
Man sollte pünktlich sein.
One should be on time.
Report Speech
In order to form the reported speech in the past perfect, you need to use Subjunctive II forms of haben and sein.
[hätte/wäre (Subjunctive II of haben/sein) + Past Participle]
Er: "Wir haben kein Geld."
He: "We have no money."
Er sagte, sie hätten kein Geld.
He said they had no money.
Sie: "Ich war da."
She: "I was there."
Sie sagte, sie wäre da gewesen.
She said she had been there.
