What Is the Indefinite Article?
The indefinite article ein / eine means "a" or "an" in English and is used when the speaker talks about a person or thing that is not yet known, not specific, or mentioned for the first time.
Forms
The indefinite article changes according to gender and case, but it exists only in the singular. There is no plural form. These forms help show the grammatical role of the noun in the sentence.

When something is mentioned for the first time, we usually use the indefinite article. This shows that the listener has no previous information about it.

Sie hat ein kleines Problem erwähnt.
She mentioned a small problem.
Non-Specific Reference
Ein / eine is used when the exact identity of a person or thing is not important or not known. The speaker talks about something in a general or open way.

Are you looking for a doctor nearby?
Sie möchte eine Lösung finden.
She wants to find a solution.
Descriptions and Professions
When professions, roles, or personal characteristics are described with adjectives, ein / eine is normally used. This helps give extra information and make the description more specific.
Er ist ein erfahrener Ingenieur.
He is an experienced engineer.
Sie ist eine geduldige Lehrerin.
She is a patient teacher.
Professions and Identity (without adjective)
After sein (be), werden (become), and bleiben (remain), professions and roles usually appear without an article.
Sie wird Ärztin.
She is becoming a doctor.

No Plural Form
The indefinite article has no plural. When talking about several unknown or unspecific things, we use no article.
