Modal Verb "können" For Intermediate learners

"können" in German Grammar

What Is können?

Können (can, to be able to) is a modal verb that is mainly used to talk about ability, possibility, and informal permission. Depending on context, können can refer to physical skills, situational limits, social interaction, or logical assumptions.

Structure

Like other German modal verbs, können is used together with a main verb in the infinitive. In main clauses, können is conjugated and placed in the second position, while the main verb goes to the end. In questions, können often comes at the beginning of the sentence.

Example

Ich kann heute gehen.

I can go today.

Kann ich kurz rein?

Can I come in for a moment?

What Is könnte?

Könnte is the Konjunktiv II (subjunctive form) of the modal verb können. While können normally expresses real ability or possibility, its form könnte is mainly used for hypothetical situations, polite offers, soft suggestions, and uncertain assumptions.

Example

Das könnte ein Fehler gewesen sein.

That might have been a mistake.

Uses

As mentioned earlier, können has different meanings depending on its form and context. Pay attention to the uses below:

Talking About Ability

Talking About Possibility

Polite Requests and Offers

Giving Informal Permission

Expressing Uncertainty

Soft Suggestions and Criticism

Talking About Ability

Können is used to say that someone is capable of doing something. This ability may be physical, mental, or learned.

Example

Ich kann schwimmen.

I can swim.

Talking About Possibility

Können is often used to describe what is realistically or logically possible.

Example

Das kann gefährlich werden.

That can become dangerous.

Polite Requests and Offers

In questions, können is commonly used to sound friendly and polite, especially in everyday situations.

Example

Kann ich Sie etwas fragen?

Can I ask you something?

Giving Informal Permission

In spoken German, können is often used instead of dürfen to give casual permission. Compared to dürfen, können sounds less formal and less rule-based.

Example

Ihr könnt hier sitzen.

You may sit here.

Expressing Uncertainty

In certain contexts, können expresses that something is possible but not certain.

Example

Er kann krank sein.

He might be ill.

Soft Suggestions and Criticism

With the Konjunktiv II form könnte, speakers can express advice, criticism, or ideas in a gentle and diplomatic way.

Example

Du könntest früher schlafen gehen.

You could go to bed earlier.

Remember to use könnte instead of kann when you want to sound polite.

Example

Incorrect: Ich kann Ihnen helfen. (too direct)

I can help you.

Better: Ich könnte Ihnen helfen. (more polite)

I can help you.
