Beer is a favorite drink for many people around the world.  It is made from water, barley, hops, and yeast.  These ingredients are mixed and left to sit for a while.  This process makes alcohol and gives beer its special flavor. 

La bière est une boisson favorite pour beaucoup de gens autour du monde. Elle est faite à partir d'eau, d'orge, de houblon et de levure. Ces ingrédients sont mélangés et laissés reposer pendant un certain temps. Ce processus produit de l'alcool et donne à la bière sa saveur spéciale.

The story of beer started a very long time ago.  Early people in a place called Mesopotamia, which is now called Iraq, made a simple type of beer.  They did not have the tools we have today, but they knew how to make beer from grains.  Over many years, the skill of making beer spread to different cultures. 

L'histoire de la bière a commencé il y a très longtemps. Les premiers habitants d'un endroit appelé Mésopotamie, qui s'appelle maintenant l'Irak, fabriquaient un type simple de bière. In the Middle Ages in Europe, beer was very common.  Monasteries, where religious men called monks lived, were important for beer making.  Monks made beer not just for themselves but also for visitors and to sell to others.

A long time ago, beer was often safer to drink than water.  This is because making beer kills bad germs in the water.  Everyone, including children, drank beer every day.  It was a normal part of what they ate.
