Beer
Read a short passage about how a drink made from barley and hops became one of the world's favorite beverages.
1.1
Beer is a favorite drink for many people around the world.  It is made from water, barley, hops, and yeast.  These ingredients are mixed and left to sit for a while.  This process makes alcohol and gives beer its special flavor.

1.2
The story of beer started a very long time ago.  Early people in a place called Mesopotamia, which is now called Iraq, made a simple type of beer.  They did not have the tools we have today, but they knew how to make beer from grains.  Over many years, the skill of making beer spread to different cultures.

1.3
In the Middle Ages in Europe, beer was very common.  Monasteries, where religious men called monks lived, were important for beer making.  Monks made beer not just for themselves but also for visitors and to sell to others.

1.4
A long time ago, beer was often safer to drink than water.  This is because making beer kills bad germs in the water.  Everyone, including children, drank beer every day.  It was a normal part of what they ate.

1.5
Nowadays, making beer is a big business.  Many countries have their types of beer.  Some beers are light and easy to drink, while others are dark and strong.  People like to try different beers from around the world.

1.6
Beer festivals are fun events where people meet to try many kinds of beers.  These festivals happen in many places and are a good way to learn about beer.  They also help people know more about how beer is made and enjoyed.

1.7
Fun fact: Did you know that the oldest recipe in the world is for beer?  This recipe was written over 4,000 years ago on a piece of clay in ancient Sumeria.
