A tart is a popular kind of baked dish.  It has a bottom layer made of dough and a top layer filled with sweet or savory ingredients.  The dough is usually firm and a bit crumbly.  This is different from pies, which are softer and covered with a layer of dough on top.

The history of tarts goes back many years.  They were first made in medieval Europe.  During that time, tarts were mostly filled with meat and were a common meal for people.  Over time, people started to make sweet tarts.  These sweet tarts often had fruit, nuts, and sugar. 

De geschiedenis van taarten gaat vele jaren terug. Ze werden voor het eerst gemaakt in middeleeuws Europa. In die tijd waren taarten meestal gevuld met vlees en een gebruikelijke maaltijd voor mensen. In de loop der tijd begonnen mensen zoete taarten te maken. Tarts are easy to make.  First, you prepare the dough and shape it into a flat circle.  Then, you press the dough into a round, shallow dish.  Next, you add your chosen filling to the dough.  For a sweet tart, you might use apples, cherries, or lemons.  For a savory tart, you might use cheese, tomatoes, or onions. 

Taarten zijn gemakkelijk te maken. Eerst bereid je het deeg en vorm je het tot een platte cirkel. Dan druk je het deeg in een ronde, ondiepe schaal. Vervolgens voeg je de vulling van je keuze toe aan het deeg. Voor een zoete taart kun je appels, kersen of citroenen gebruiken. Voor een hartige taart kun je kaas, tomaten of uien gebruiken.

After adding the filling, you bake the tart in an oven until the crust is golden brown and the filling is cooked.  When it is done, you take the tart out of the oven and let it cool.

Fun fact: In France, there is a famous tart called "tarte Tatin."  It was created by accident by the Tatin sisters in the late 1800s.  They were trying to make a traditional apple pie but ended up cooking the apples in butter and sugar for too long.  To fix the mistake, they baked the pastry on top of the apples.  The result was so delicious that it became a beloved recipe in France. 

Leuk feitje: In Frankrijk is er een beroemde taart genaamd "tarte Tatin". Hij is per ongeluk gemaakt door de zussen Tatin aan het einde van de 19e eeuw. Ze probeerden een traditionele appeltaart te maken, maar kookten de appels te lang in boter en suiker. Om de fout te herstellen, bakten ze het deeg bovenop de appels.
