Interrogative Adverbs in Spanish

What Are Interrogative Adverbs?

Interrogative adverbs (adverbios interrogativos) are used to ask about the place, time, manner, reason, quantity, or purpose of an action. They appear at the beginning of direct questions and are always marked with a written accent (´). The main interrogative adverbs in Spanish include:

¿Dónde?

¿Cuándo?

¿Cómo?

¿Por qué?

¿Cuánto?

Dónde

"Dónde" is used to ask about the place of an action or event, similar to the English "where." For example:

Example

¿Dónde está el baño?

Where is the bathroom?

¿Dónde vives ahora?

Where do you live now?

"Dónde" can combine with certain prepositions to ask for more specific information. For example, "a dónde" asks about destination while "de dónde" asks about origin. Here are some examples:

Example

¿A dónde vas?

Where are you going (to)?

¿De dónde eres?

Where are you from?

Cuándo

"Cuándo" is used to ask about the time of an action, similar to the English "when." For example:

Example

¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños?

When is your birthday?

¿Cuándo empieza la película?

When does the movie start?

Like "dónde," "cuándo" can also combine with some prepositions to ask more specific questions. For example, "hasta cuándo" asks about duration in the future, similar to "until," while "desde cuándo" asks about duration in the past, similar to "since."

Example

¿Hasta cuándo te quedas?

Until when are you staying?

¿Desde cuándo estudias español?

Since when do you study Spanish?

Cómo

"Cómo" is used to ask about the way or the manner in which an action is performed, similar to the English "how." For example:

Example

¿Cómo funciona esto?

How does this work?

¿Cómo lo hiciste?

How did you do it?

Por qué

"Por qué" asks for the reason behind an action or situation, similar to the English "why." Here are some examples:

Example

¿Por qué estás triste?

Why are you sad?

¿Por qué no viniste ayer?

Why didn't you come yesterday?

Warning!

Do not confuse the interrogative adverb "por qué" with the conjunction "porque" which means "because" and is used to introduce the reason for an action or statement, or the noun "porqué" which means "the reason". Compare the examples:

Example

¿Por qué estudias español?

Why do you study Spanish?

interrogative adverb

Estudio español porque es un idioma internacional.

I study Spanish because it's an international language.

conjunction

El porqué de me decisión fue claro.

The reason for my decision was clear.

noun

Cuánto

"Cuánto" is used to ask about quantities and corresponds with the English "how many/much," but keep in mind that "cuánto" is used invariably regardless of countability of the quantity. For example:

Example

¿Cuánto cuesta?

How much does it cost?

¿Cuánto tienes?

How many do you have?

It can also be used with an adjective or adverb to ask about its degree. For example:

Example

¿Cuánto rápido puedes correr?

How fast can you run?

¿Cuánto más grande es?

How much bigger is it?

Warning!

When used as a pronoun or determiner, "cuánto" has different forms depending on the gender and number of the noun it refers back to. But when used as an adverb, it has a fixed form since it does not refer to a noun.

Example

¿Cuánta agua bebes?

How much water do you drink?

Used as an interrogative determiner

¿Cuánto bebes?

How much do you drink?

Used as an interrogative adverb
