Comma in French

What is the Comma (La virgule) in French?

The comma (la virgule) is one of the most important punctuation marks in French. It helps organize sentences, clarify meaning, and guide the reader's rhythm. While many rules are similar to English, French comma usage has its own conventions and style.

Separating Elements in a List

Use a comma to separate items in a series. Look at the examples:

Example

J'ai acheté des pommes, des poires, et des bananes.

I bought apples, pears, and bananas.

Elle parle français, anglais, et espagnol.

She speaks French, English, and Spanish.

Nous avons visité Paris, Lyon, et Marseille.

We visited Paris, Lyon, and Marseille.

Tip!

The final comma before et (Oxford comma) is optional in French and less common than in English.

Separating Clauses

The comma separates main and subordinate clauses, especially when the subordinate clause comes first.

Example

Quand il pleut, je reste à la maison.

When it rains, I stay home.

Parce qu\'elle était fatiguée,\ elle s'est couchée tôt.

Because she was tired, she went to bed early.

Bien qu'il soit malade, il est allé travailler.

Although he was sick, he went to work.

Tip!

If the subordinate clause comes after the main clause, a comma is usually not necessary:

Example

Je reste à la maison quand il pleut.

I stay home when it rains.

Before Coordinating Conjunctions

In French, a comma is often used before "mais", "donc", "or", "et" when connecting two independent clauses.

Example

Il voulait sortir, mais il pleuvait.

He wanted to go out, but it was raining.

Je suis fatigué, donc je vais me reposer.

I am tired, so I will rest.

Nous avons étudié, or nous avons échoué.

We studied, yet we failed.

Elle a appelé, et je lui ai répondu.

She called, and I answered her.

Tip!

For short sentences, the comma can sometimes be omitted:

Example

Il vient et il parle. → no comma necessary.

After Introductory Expressions

The comma follows introductory words or phrases at the beginning of a sentence.

Example

Cependant, il n'a rien dit.

However, he said nothing.

En général, j'aime le chocolat.

Generally, I like chocolate.

Par exemple, les chats dorment beaucoup.

For example, cats sleep a lot.

Adding Extra Information (Apposition)

Commas are used to insert additional, non-essential information.

Example

Paul, mon voisin, est très gentil.

Paul, my neighbor, is very kind.

Marie, fatiguée, s'est couchée tôt.

Marie, tired, went to bed early.

Ce livre, que j'adore, est très connu.

This book, which I love, is very famous.
