Parentheses and Brackets in French

What Are Parentheses and Brackets in French?

Parentheses and brackets (Les parenthèses et les crochets) are punctuation marks used to add extra information to a sentence. They help clarify meaning, provide details, or include explanations without interrupting the main structure. While both serve similar purposes, they are used in different contexts.

Les parenthèses ( ) – Parentheses

Parentheses are used to insert additional or optional information that is not essential to the main sentence.
If you remove the text inside parentheses, the sentence should still make sense.

Adding Extra Information

Elle part demain (si tout va bien).

She leaves tomorrow (if everything goes well).
