A bruise is a mark on the skin. It can be blue, purple, or green. A bruise occurs when you hit your arm, leg, or another part of the body. It can happen from falling or bumping into something. Anyone can get a bruise.
A bruise can hurt when you touch it, but sometimes it doesn't hurt much. The skin is not cut. The blood stays under the skin, and that's why the color changes.
A bruise heals in a few days. The color changes every day: purple, then green, then yellow. When the color disappears, the bruise is healed.
To help a bruise, you should rest the injured part. You can apply something cold to it, like ice wrapped in a cloth. That helps the bruise get better.
You have to be gentle with blue. You must not press hard on it. If the blue is on the leg or arm, it can help to lift the leg or arm for a little while.
Most bruises are not serious. They go away on their own. If a bruise is very large, very painful, or does not go away, you should see a doctor.
A bruise can happen to anyone. With rest and care, the bruise disappears and the skin returns to normal.
