Word Division in German Grammar

What is Word Devision?

Word division (Worttrennung) is the German spelling rule that explains how words are separated at the end of a line when there is not enough space. It helps keep texts readable and ensures that words are divided according to pronunciation and meaning. Correct word division prevents misunderstandings and supports clear written communication. The rules for word separation can be categorized as following:

One-Syllable Words

Syllables and Word Structure

Sound Units and Letter Groups

Foreign Words

One-Syllable Words

One-syllable words are never divided at the end of a line. They must always remain complete, even when space is limited. This rule keeps sentences smooth and easy to read.

Example

Das Brot ist frisch.

The bread is fresh.

"Brot" cannot be divided.

Syllables and Word Structure

Most German words are divided according to natural pronunciation or meaningful parts. Multi-syllable words are usually divided where speakers pause naturally. Compound words are divided at the boundaries of their word parts.

Example

Der Bahn-hof ist sehr voll.

The train station is very crowded.

Wir be-su-chen mor-gen Berlin.

We are visiting Berlin tomorrow.

Sound Units and Letter Groups

Certain sound combinations must always stay together. Diphthongs such as ai, au, ei, eu, äu, and oi are never separated. Letter groups that represent one sound ch, sch, ck, ph, th, sh, tsch must also remain intact. When several consonants appear together, usually only the last consonant moves to the next line.

Example

Die Kin-der klat-schen laut.

The children clap loudly.

kl-at-schen is not allowed here.

Ich höre gern eu-ro-pä-ische Musik.

I like listening to European music.

Foreign Words

In foreign words and words with unclear internal structure, more than one correct division is often possible. Both syllable-based and structure-based divisions may be accepted.

Example

Das Ho-tel ist teuer.

The hotel is expensive.

Apostrophes and Special Characters

Words should not be divided directly after apostrophes, slashes, or similar symbols. The visual structure of the word must be respected.

Example

Wrong: Goethe'-sche

Right: Goe-the'sche

Avoiding Misleading Divisions

Words must never be divided in a way that changes their meaning or creates confusing parts. Such divisions should always be avoided.

Example

Wrong: The-rap-ist

Right: Thera-pist
