Adverbs of Place For Intermediate learners
What Are Adverbs of Place?
Adverbs of place (los adverbios de lugar) tell us where an action happens or where something or someone is located, answering the question "¿dónde?". The main adverbs of place in Spanish are:
aquí → here
ahí → there
allí → there
allá → over there
cerca → nearby
lejos → far away
dentro → inside
fuera → outside
delante → in front
detrás → behind
arriba → up / upstairs
abajo → down / downstairs
Here are some example sentences:
Vivo cerca.
I live nearby.
El aeropuerto está lejos.
The airport is far away.
Camina delante.
Walk in front.
Los niños están jugando arriba.
The children are playing upstairs.
Quédate detrás.
Stay behind.
Indicating Distance
The adverbs "aquí," "ahí," "allí," and "allá" are used to show the relative distance of an action or object. "Aquí" shows a close distance from the speaker and is equivalent to the English "here." "Ahí" shows a medium distance from the speaker which can be near the listener, while "allí" and "allá" show a farther distance from both speaker and listener. Here are some examples:
Estoy aquí.
I'm here.
Tu libro está ahí.
Your book is there.
La montaña está allí.
The mountain is over there.
Mis abuelos viven allá en el campo.
My grandparents live there in the countryside.
Indicating Direction
Depending on the verb, adverbs of place can also show direction. If the verb shows a static position, the adverb shows location. But if the verb indicates movement, the adverb shows direction of movement. Compare the examples:
Mis padres viven allí.
My parents live there.
location
Voy allí después.
I go there afterward.
direction
Estan aquí.
They are here.
location
Ven aquí, por favor.
Come here, please.
direction
Some adverbs combine with the preposition "a" to show the direction or destination of movement and answer the question "¿Adónde?" For example:
afuera
adentro
adelante
Here are some example sentences:
Sal afuera.
Go outside.
Guarda eso adentro.
Put that inside.
Sigue adelante.
Go forward.
Placement in Sentence
Adverbs of place typically come after the verb or after the direct object if there is one. When there are other adverbs in the sentence, the adverb of place typically comes after the adverb of manner and before the adverb of time. Check out the examples:
Viven aquí.
They live here.
after the verb
Encontré el libro allí.
I found the book there.
after the direct object
Trabaja bien aquí.
He/She works well here.
after adverb of manner
Habló allí ayer.
