¿Qué es el verbo modal should?
Should es un verbo modal en inglés que se utiliza para expresar consejo, obligación, expectativa o probabilidad.
Estructura
Como todos los verbos modales, should va seguido de la forma base del verbo.
She should do her homework quickly.
Ella debería hacer su tarea rápidamente.
They should head home soon.
Deberían irse a casa pronto.
Para formar la negación, se añade not después de should.
She should not talk like that in front of me.
Ella no debería hablar así delante de mí.
We shouldn't smoke in here.
No deberíamos fumar aquí.
Para formar preguntas, should se coloca al inicio de la oración, antes del sujeto.
Should I call you in the evening then?
¿Debería llamarte por la noche entonces?
Should he take a nap right now?
¿Debería echar una siesta ahora mismo?
También puede usarse en preguntas coletilla:
I think they should leave immediately, shouldn't they?
Creo que deberían irse inmediatamente, ¿no?
Selina should run to get to her class, shouldn't she?
Selina debería correr para llegar a clase, ¿no?
Usos
Should se usa principalmente para:
dar consejos o sugerencias
expresar expectativas o probabilidad
dar instrucciones
hablar de obligaciones o expectativas

Predicción y expectativa
Se usa para hablar de situaciones probables o esperadas.
She should be here any minute now.
Ella debería llegar en cualquier momento.
They should reach the ship in 30 minutes.
Deberían llegar al barco en 30 minutos.
Instrucciones
Everybody should throw their cigarettes in this ash tray.
Todos deberían tirar sus cigarrillos en este cenicero.
She should not treat me like this.
Ella no debería tratarme así.
Nota!
Si se quiere expresar mayor obligación, se usa must en lugar de should.
You should study for tomorrow.
Deberías estudiar para mañana.
You must study for tomorrow.
Debes estudiar para mañana.
Obligaciones y expectativas en el presente
También puede usarse con una estructura progresiva:
Should + be + -ing
You should be doing your homework by dinner.
Deberías estar haciendo tu tarea antes de la cena.
They should be talking to the manager right now.
Deberían estar hablando con el gerente ahora mismo.
Nota!
Shall es un verbo modal menos común, usado principalmente en contextos formales.
Shall we dance?
¿Bailamos?
I shall not do as you say, sir.
No haré lo que usted dice, señor.
