Co jsou členy?
Členy jsou malá slova, která stojí před podstatným jménem a určují ho jako specifické nebo obecné.
Anglické členy
V angličtině existují dva typy členů: „the“ se nazývá určitý člen a „a“/„an“ se nazývají neurčité členy.

Neurčitý členy
„A“ a „an“ se nazývají neurčité členy. Používají se s jednotnými podstatnými jmény k označení jakéhokoli obecného podstatného jména tohoto druhu.
Rozdíl mezi „a“ a „an“ spočívá v tom, že „a“ se používá před souhláskovým zvukem a „an“ před samohláskovým zvukem (a, e, i, o, u):

Určitý člen
„The“ je určitý člen. Může být použit před jednotným nebo množným podstatným jménem k označení konkrétního podstatného jména, které je známé jak mluvčímu, tak posluchači. Podívejte se na příklady:
I ordered a pizza and a salad. The pizza was nice but the salad was disgusting.
Objednal jsem si pizzu a salát. Ta pizza byla dobrá, ale ten salát byl odporný.
That is the school that Mary went to.
To je ta škola, do které Mary chodila.
Mary has a dog. The dog's name is Rover.
Mary má psa. Ten pes se jmenuje Rover.
V druhé větě je již jasné, o kterém psovi mluvčí mluví. Proto je použit určitý člen.
