冠詞とは何か？
冠詞は名詞の前に置かれる小さな単語で、その名詞が特定のものか一般的なものかを示します。
英語の冠詞
英語には2種類の冠詞があります。'the'は定冠詞と呼ばれ、'a'/'an'は不定冠詞と呼ばれます。

不定冠詞
a'と'an'は不定冠詞と呼ばれます。これらは単数名詞と一緒に使われ、その種類の一般的な名詞を指します。
'a'と'an'の違いは、'a'が子音の音の前に使われ、'an'が母音の音（a, e, i, o, u）の前に使われることです：

定冠詞
'the'は定冠詞です。これは単数名詞または複数名詞の前に使われ、話し手と聞き手の両方にわかっている特定の名詞を指します。以下の例を見てください：
I ordered a pizza and a salad. The pizza was nice but the salad was disgusting.
私はピザとサラダを注文しました。ピザは美味しかったですが、サラダはまずかったです。
That is the school that Mary went to.
あれはメアリーが通っていた学校です。
Mary has a dog. The dog's name is Rover.
メアリーは犬を飼っています。その犬の名前はローバーです。
2つ目の文では、すでに話し手がどの犬について話しているかが明確です。そのため、定冠詞が使われています。
