not を使った否定
文や節を否定形にする最も一般的な方法は「not」を使うことである。
I want to study English Literature. → I do not want to study English Literature.
英文学を勉強したい。→ 英文学を勉強したくない。
Lamia is at the office right now. → Lamia is not at the office right now.
ラミアは今オフィスにいる。→ ラミアは今オフィスにいない。
短縮形（n't）
「not」の短縮形は「n't」であり、動詞の直後に付く。
She doesn't want to swim right now.
彼女は今泳ぎたくない。
I don't like to work.
私は働くのが好きではない。
be動詞の否定
be動詞は主動詞および助動詞として使われる。否定形は単純に「not」を付けることで作る。
I am in the university. → I'm not in the university.
私は大学にいる。→ 私は大学にいない。
Ashley is my cousin. → Ashley isn't my cousin.
アシュリーは私のいとこである。→ アシュリーは私のいとこではない。
They are eating dinner. → They are not eating dinner. (または they aren't eating dinner.)
彼らは夕食を食べている。→ 彼らは夕食を食べていない。
注意
「I am」の否定では短縮形は使えない。
I am at school. → I am not at school.
私は学校にいます。 → 私は学校にいません。
※ × I amn't at school
do動詞の否定
doは主動詞および助動詞として使われる。否定形は do / does + not で作る。
I write in English. → I don't write in English.
私は英語で書く。→ 書かない。
Reera wants to quit her job. → Reera doesn't want to quit her job.
リーラは仕事を辞めたいと思っている。→ 辞めたくない。
Those lawyers enjoy what they do. → Those lawyers don't enjoy what they do.
その弁護士たちは自分の仕事を楽しんでいない。
have動詞の否定
haveも主動詞と助動詞の両方として使われる。
I have gone to the theatre before. → I haven't gone to the theatre before.
私は以前劇場に行ったことがある。→ 行ったことがない。
Lily has been to New York. → Lily hasn't been to New York.
リリーはニューヨークに行ったことがある。→ 行ったことがない。
注意（haveの主動詞）
haveが主動詞の場合は直接否定せず、do/doesを使う。
I have a glass of water. → I don't have a glass of water.
私はコップ一杯の水を持っています。 → 私はコップ一杯の水を持っていません。
※ × I haven't a glass of water
She has sung that song. → She hasn't sung that song.
彼女はその歌を歌ったことがある。→ 彼女はその歌を歌ったことがない。
否定疑問文
notは否定疑問文にも使われる。
Are you on the phone? → Aren't you on the phone?
電話中ですか？ → 電話してないのですか？
Is she really saying all this? → Isn't she really saying all this?
彼女は本当にこんなことを言っているの？ → 彼女は本当にこんなことを言っているんじゃないの？
Do you like to play the piano? → Don't you like to play the piano?
あなたはピアノを弾くのが好きですか？ → あなたはピアノを弾くのが好きではありませんか？
Does your father shout at you? → Doesn't your father shout at you?
あなたのお父さんはあなたに怒鳴りますか？ → あなたのお父さんはあなたに怒鳴りませんか？
命令文の否定
命令文を否定形にする場合は、文頭に「do not / don't」を加える。
Close the door. → Do not close the door. (または don't close the door.)
ドアを閉めてください。→ ドアを閉めないでください。
Sit here. → Don't sit here.
ここに座ってください。→ ここに座ってはいけません。
