Conform vs. Confirm
What Is Their Main Difference?
These words are two completely different words. 'Conform' is mainly used to show obedience to a set of rules, and principles whereas, 'confirm' is used to show that something is right, true, and certain. However, these two words are nearly identical in their dictations which makes them a bit confusing.
Differences
We use 'conform' to show that a person, a group of people, or any other community must obey the specific rules and principles of the place they are in; for example, every workplace has its own criteria for clothing, behavior and etc. When we want to work/live in a particular place, we must obey its rules. Look:
Conforming to all societal norms means hiding my true self which is not what I will do anymore.
In order to avoid problems, it's recommended that you conform to the rules to the extent that you're not pressured.
'Confirm', on the other hand, indicates that something is true, right, or we use it when we want to make sure something will/will not happen. Look at the following examples:
I still cannot find enough evidence to confirm my innocence.
My supervisor confirmed my position.
Are They Interchangeable?
Although these two verbs look pretty much alike, and they are pronounced nearly the same, they cannot be used interchangeably because the listener will not understand what we are saying. Compare:
✓ I agree to conform to societal norms, but not to the extent of losing my mental health and my true self.
X I agree to confirm societal norms, but not to the extent of losing my mental health and my true self.
As you can see, it makes no sense.
