What Are Vowels?
Vowels are sounds that we produce without any stricture in our vocal tract. Vowels have different levels of loudness and length.
English Vowels
Vowels in the English language typically refer both to vowel sounds and to the written letter that normally represents them which are:
- a
- e
- i
- o
- u
- sometimes y
Each of these letters or the combinations of these letters produces a sound that is called a vowel sound. Here are some examples:
ə | ɔ |
ɛ | æ |
ʌ | ɒ |
As you can see, the vowel sounds are represented by special symbols which is called the IPA. The IPA is an alphabet based on the Latin script. It is used to show the sounds of a language in a written form.
