Now, let's move on to the next pair of confusing words. Do you know where they are used and how different they are? C'mon.

"Directions" vs. "Instructions" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both of them refer to how we can do something. However, we can use 'directions' to show the way to a particular location. Also, 'directions' is less commanding than 'instructions' when we are providing steps as to how something should be done.

Differences

When we want to tell someone how they can get to a particular place, we give them 'directions', not 'instructions'. Additionally, we can use 'directions' to provide steps in order to finish a task, a project, etc. It is less commanding, though:

You can easily find the directions on this website.

Do you know how you can give directions to that old lady?

'Instructions', contrariwise, are more forceful and it is specifically used when a task, a project, etc. is expected to be done. Look at the following examples:

If you are looking for instructions, go to the public services sections.

The instructions are all vague and useless.

Similarities

Both refer to providing information as to how something should be done properly. Check out the examples below:

I can see the board of instructions there in the corner.

I thought you wanted to ask about the directions to Hotel Plaza.

Are They Interchangeable?

Since they have slightly different meanings, they cannot be used interchangeably. Compare:

✓ You can find Plaza Hotel directions in the brochure.

X You can find Plaza Hotel instructions in the brochure.

As you can see, we cannot use 'instructions' to refer to the location.
