Sketch vs. Drawing

"Sketch" vs. "Drawing" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both are artistic representations of something/someone on paper. However, a 'sketch' is not as polished as a 'drawing' and it is raw. A 'drawing' has more details and is filtered.

Differences

As stated above, a 'sketch' is more about a quick portrait of something/someone on a piece of paper. It is not as filtered as a 'drawing'. Therefore, it is raw. Take a look at the following examples:

Example

Let's start with a sketch of the body and proceed.

She took her sketchpad and started working on it.

A 'drawing', on the other hand, refers to a more detailed, filtered version of a 'sketch'. Take a look at the examples below:

Example

I could see ambiguous drawings strewn all over the floor.

This was Anna's last drawing.

Similarities

Both refer to an artistic representation of something/someone. Check out the examples below:

Example

Let me take a look at your drawing for a moment.

What are you gonna do with all these sketches?

Are They Interchangeable?

Although they are both forms of art, they can never be used interchangeably. A 'sketch' is not as filtered as a 'drawing'. Both examples below are correct but they have different meanings. Compare:

Example

✓ She analyzed my sketch and grinned.

✓ She analyzed my drawing and grinned.
