Love vs. Adore
'Love' and 'adore' both convey deep affection or strong positive feelings towards someone or something. However, 'adore' describes a more general sense of admiration. This lesson will discuss the similarities and differences between these two verbs.
Similarity
Both 'love' and 'adore' can be used to describe romantic feelings or a strong sense of affection and caring for a person as a well as a more general sense of liking or having positive feelings about something. Although in the second sense, adore is generally considered informal.
He absolutely loves her.
He absolutely adores her.
Here, 'adore' refers to a strong sense of affection for someone.
I love my grandmother's homemade apple pie.
I adore my grandmother's homemade apple pie.
Both verbs can be used to describe a more general sense of liking something.
Difference
Generally, adore expresses a more intense feeling of love and affection for someone. Furthermore, it is most commonly used to imply a more general sense of admiration or delight and does not necessarily denote romantic feelings. 'Love', on the other hand, can have a wider range of connotations, including feelings of deep attachment, care, warmth, affection, as well as romantic feelings. For example:
I adore little toddlers who are just starting to talk.
I love my partner more than anything in the world.
