Push vs. Shove 

What is the difference between 'push' and 'shove'?

To 'push' something means to make it move forward or away from yourself. To 'shove' something also means to make something move in that direction, but in a rough or aggressive manner. This lesson will discuss this difference further.

Level of Force

'Push' is a more general term that refers to exerting force against an object or person in order to move them away from oneself or to move an object in a particular direction. It can involve a relatively gentle or controlled application of force as well as a more forceful act. 'Shove' is more specific and often implies a forceful and aggressive application of force to move an object or person. It often involves using greater strength or sudden, uncontrolled movements.

He pushed the door open with his shoulder.

She pushed the stroller along the sidewalk.

He shoved his way through the crowd.

He angrily shoved the book into his bag and walked out.
