Perform vs. Execute

Both verbs mean to carry out a task, but they are each used with different kinds of tasks. This lesson will clarify the differences between them.

What is the difference between 'perform' and 'execute'?

While both 'perform' and 'execute' mean to do something or carry out a task, 'execute' involves carrying out a plan while perform is concerned with carrying out a task or operation. This lesson will clarify the difference between these two verbs.

Difference in Context of Use

'Perform' refers to the act of carrying out a task, action, or function in a skilled or competent manner. It emphasizes accomplishment of a task or duty and often implies that it must be done in a competent or professional manner. 'Perform' is used in contexts such as performing a job, a task, an experiment, or an operation. 'Execute', on the other hand, is concerned with carrying out or accomplishing a plan or order or putting it to action in a precise or step-by-step manner. It is often used in contexts such as executing a business strategy, a will, a military operation, or a contract, and emphasizes the efficiency, accuracy, or adherence to a specific set of instructions or procedures. Accordingly, it is often associated with tasks that require careful planning, implementation, or detailed steps. Here are some examples:

The teacher asked the students to perform a science experiment in the laboratory.

The surgeon performed a successful operation on the patient.

The military unit executed a dangerous mission.

When talking about a carefully planned and strategic action, 'execute' cannot be used interchangeably with 'perform'.

The chef executed the recipe flawlessly, resulting in a delicious meal.

When talking about putting a step-by-step procedure or instruction into action, 'execute' cannot be used interchangeably with 'perform'.
