What Are Phrases and Clauses in English?

A phrase is created by a set of words used beside each other. Remember, a phrase does not contain a subject or a verb and as a result, it does not imply a complete meaning. Phrases can also be used as subjects and objects of the sentences.

A clause usually contains a subject and a verb; However, non-finite clauses do not have a subject. Clauses can be dependent or independent clauses.
By using different clauses you can also form compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.
