Appetite vs. Hunger

This time we're going to analyze all there is about 'appetite' and 'hunger'. Come with me and see what we can learn from them.

"Appetite" vs. "Hunger" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both of these words refer to the need for eating food. However, 'appetite' is simply a sudden desire to eat salty, sugary, or creamy food. It is mainly triggered by external forces. Also, the person is necessarily not hungry. 'Hunger', on the other hand, refers to one of the basic needs in order to live. It is physical and it comes gradually.

Differences

As stated above, 'appetite' is when someone sees a picture of a delicious pepperoni pizza on TV and suddenly feels like having it. It is a desire and that person is not necessarily hungry. Check out the following examples:

I have recently lost my appetite for cakes.

Could you tell me some of the common symptoms of loss of appetite?

However, 'hunger' is when someone needs fuel and needs food in order to stay alive. It is not sudden. Additionally, it is physical. Look at the following examples:

Unfortunately, many young people are being driven to theft due to hunger.

I'm really hungry mom. I cannot wait till dinner is ready.

Similarities

Both of these words refer to a need to eat. Look at the following examples:

I have lost my appetite for fast food in general.

What did you say your hunger was stemming from?

Are They Interchageable?

Since these words differ in meaning, they cannot be used interchangeably. Below, we have two examples but the second one makes no sense. Compare:

✓ Many children suffer from hunger everyday in Africa.

X Many children suffer from appetite everyday in Africa.

'Appetite' refers to a sudden desire to eat so no one can suffer from appetite.
