Fun vs. Funny
Differences
As I said above, 'fun' is used when someone is enjoying their time. It is used to indicate pleasures. It can also be both a noun and an adjective. Look at the examples below:
I told you it would be fun to spend time with me.
Did you have fun?
I miss the fun birthday parties I got invited to as a child.
'Funny', however, refers to something that makes you laugh and excited. Additionally, we can use it when we want to say how ridiculous someone is, sarcastically. It is only an adjective. Take a look at the examples below:
Let me tell you a funny story.
How is my unemployment funny to y'all?
Similarities
Both refer to enjoying one's time and feeling happy afterward. Look below:
Stop making funny faces. I can't stop laughing.
You're such a fun person, Iliana.
Are They Interchangeable?
Since they have different grammatical functions, they cannot be used interchangeably. Compare:
✓ Oh my God! John looks so funny.
X Oh my God! John looks so fun.
As you can see, this one is grammatically incorrect.
