Forth vs. Fourth

In this lesson, we're going to work on the details of these two confusing words. Many people confuse them with one another. C'mon.

"Forth" vs. "Fourth" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Interestingly, these two have no similarities. They are only pronounced the same way. 'Forth' is used when someone asks another to move towards them, whereas, 'fourth' refers to number four.

Differences

We use 'forth' when we want to indicate something moving forward; be it in time, place, etc. Look at the examples below:

Come forth Maria. There's no need to be scared of me.

I can feel you coming forth.

'Fourth' refers to the number four. Check out the examples below:

Is July the fourth month of the year?

The fourth child came forward and revealed the truth.

Similarities

These two words are only similar in that they are have nearly identical dictations.

Are They Interchangeable?

As stated above, these two are totally different. So, they cannot be used interchangeably. Compare:

✓ Dracula tried to control his anger and said: "Just come forth."

X Dracula tried to control his anger and said: "Just come fourth."

As you can see, this one makes absolutely no sense.
