"Gesture" vs. "Posture" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both refer to how we communicate with our bodies. In other words, they are associated with our body language. However, 'gesture' is when we try to complete a conversation or show an idea with our bodies. 'Posture', on the other hand, is about how we feel inside.

Differences

We use 'posture' when our bodies show how we feel inside. Tensions, anger, sadness, happiness, etc. are all visible from the position of our bodies. It is often intentional; meaning that we are not aware of it. Look at the examples below:

Her posture suggested she was tensed.

However you try to hide your feelings from me, your posture reveals it.

'Gesture', on the other hand, refers to the use of our bodies when we want to support what we are saying or announce an idea. Some people move their hands when they are discussing something. Take a look below:

I waved her hand and shouted: 'take care!'

Waving the hand is an example of 'gesture'.

Remember when we were children and we used to make funny gestures with our hands on the wall?

Similarities

As stated above, both refer to our body language. Analyze the examples below:

Look at her gestures. She looks so shallow.

If you wanna get to know people, pay attention to their postures.

Are They Interchangeable?

Most people use these terms interchangeably. Compare:

✓ I wanna make all the funny gestures I know to make you laugh so cooperate.

✓ I wanna make all the funny postures I know to make you laugh so cooperate.

As you can see, both refer to the same thing.
