What Is Their Main Difference?

Both refer to moving from one place to another. However, 'immigration' is when someone enters a different country and decides to live there for the rest of their lives. We use 'migration' when movement happens, whether it is within a country or from one country to another.

Differences

As mentioned above, 'immigration' is used when someone decides to move to another country and live there forever. Look at the examples below:

Immigration rate is being increased rapidly.

What's the point of immigration when everything will remain the same?

'Migration' is when a group of people or animals move from one place to another. It does not necessarily have to be moving across international borders. Check out the examples below:

Scientists are analyzing why suddenly all birds are migrating to the south.

My brother and his family decided to migrate to Northern Ireland.

Similarities

As mentioned above, they both indicate movement from one place to another. Study the following examples:

Ever since the situation got worse, many people have decided to immigrate to countries like America and Canada.

Are They Interchangeable?

Most native speakers use these words interchangeably, however, if you wanna be specific, remember not to use 'immigrate' for movement within a country's borders. Compare:
