Injured vs. Hurt

"Injured" vs. "Hurt" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both refer to suffering from pain. However, someone can be hurt on an emotional level. In other words, 'hurt' can be physical or emotional, but an 'injured' person only suffers from physical pain.

Differences

As mentioned above, when someone is 'injured', someone/something has caused them physical pain. Look at the examples below:

Example

Adam glanced at his injured arm and shrugged.

Oh my God! Her injured nose is still bleeding.

'Hurt', on the other hand, can refer to emotional pain. In other words, someone can be physically or emotionally hurt. Take a look at the examples below:

Example

She hurt my feelings real bad and she will pay for it.

Nobody ever tells us that being emotionally hurt is more painful in comparison to being physically hurt.

Similarities

Both refer to suffering from pain. Check out the examples below:

Example

The doctor said that his head was badly injured.

How can I ever forgive someone who has hurt me this much?

Are They Interchangeable?

Although they both refer to being in pain, they cannot be used interchangeably. 'Hurt' is broader than 'injured'. Compare:

Example

✓ She felt hurt when her partner seemed indifferent.

X She felt injured when her partner seemed indifferent.

As you can see, this one makes no sense.
