"Rules" vs. "Laws" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both refer to a set of principles designed to govern something. However, 'rules' control smaller issues like particular plans, organizations, and institutes, whereas, 'laws' are comprised of several rules for governing a large group of people.

Differences

As mentioned above, 'rules' are regulations for controlling different institutes, practices, gatherings, etc. Breaking the rules results in mild consequences. Look at the examples below:

I will never obey such dictatorial rules.

Listen Caroline, if everyone were to act according based on their own rules, there would be chaos everywhere.

'Laws', on the other hand, consist of several rules for governing and controlling a large community of people. Defying the laws of a country results in severe punishments. These 'laws' are only verified by the legislature in that country. Below, we have provided examples for you:

In the old days, there were different laws regarding women's rights.

You either abide by the law or you get a bullet in your head.

Similarities

Both refer to a set of principles and regulations for controlling something. It can be a small institute to a big country. Take a look at the examples below:

Today, I've decided to remind you of the punishments you will receive if you do not abide by the law.

Strict rules are always the solution.

Are They Interchangeable?

Although they are both the same, 'law' is broader in terms of definition, whereas, 'rule' is not. So, it is better not to use them interchangeably. Although, it will not make that much difference. Compare:

✓ Applying such rules only results in infuriating more citizens.

✓ Applying such laws only results in infuriating more citizens.
