"Venomous" vs. "Poisonous" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both indicate something toxic that can cause serious injuries or lead to death. However, 'venomous' describes animals that have a toxic substance within called 'venom'. Examples of these animals are snakes, spiders, some fish, etc. 'Posonous' is more about different natural or chemical substances that are harmful.

Differences

As mentioned above, 'venomous' describes animals that have venom in their blood. Snakes, spiders, some fish, etc. go under this category. If a living creature is stung, they will be seriously injured or it might even lead to death. Look at the examples below:

'Poisonous', however, refers to any kind of food, containing a toxic substance within called 'poison'. Certain substances like 'cyanide' are 'poisonous'. Check out the examples below:

Most native speakers usually use these two words interchangeably. Although, it is important to remember that 'venomous' is more about animals than 'poisonous'. Compare:
