In this lesson, we're gonna lecture you about the differences and similarities between these two words. Well, if you wanna learn, join us.

"Wealthy" vs. "Rich" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both refer to people who have a great deal of money. However, a 'rich' person does not have the proper knowledge to save their money and spends more than the amount he/she earns, whereas, a 'wealthy' individual does not waste money.

Differences

A 'rick' person is more concerned about appearing 'rich' in front of other people, therefore he/she tends to waste lots of money. In other words, they do not have the proper knowledge on how to save their money. Look at the examples below:

She's always showing off. She just walks around and is like: Look guy! I'm \rich.

I don't want to marry a rich man. I wanna be rich myself.

A 'wealthy' individual, however, has the proper knowledge of how to save money, while spending it. They do not need to show off and waste too much money on their appearance. Look at the examples below:

It's interesting how different a wealthy person and a \rich individual dress.

They say not all the rich people are wealthy.

Similarities

They both indicate someone who has loads of money. Check out the following examples:

I do not come from a rich family.

Wealthy people enjoy minimalism in most things.

Are They Interchangeable?

As stated above, a 'wealthy' person knows how to use their money appropriately, whereas, a 'rich' person does not. So, they cannot be used interchangeably. Both examples below are correct, but they have slight differences in meaning. Compare:

✓ These rich kids make me wanna throw up.

✓ These wealthy kids make me wanna throw up.
