In this lesson, we're gonna lecture you about the differences and similarities between these two words. Well, do you know anything about them?

"Equity" vs. "Equality" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

They are both related to social justice and fairness. However, 'equity' means being impartial and free from any kind of bias, whereas, 'equality' indicates treating everyone the same.

Differences

'Equity' indicates justice according to the natural law, while, 'equality' indicates treating everyone the same. The problem with 'equality' is that not everyone is the same. Different factors like age, sex, nationality, etc. influence individual needs. Look at the examples below:

Gender equality in work is about different genders having access to all opportunities.

Equity is more about creating different opportunities for people to have equal results.

Similarities

Both are about social justice and impartiality. Look below:

The LGBTQ+ Equality

We demand social equity.

Are They Interchangeable?

Since they have slight differences, they cannot be used interchangeably. 'Equality' refers to treating everyone the same, while, 'equity' indicate giving people different opportunities to have equal results.
