What is the difference between 'realize' and 'perceive'?

Both 'realize' and 'perceive' mean to notice or become aware of the presence, qualities, or significance of something. However, 'perceive' emphasizes the act of sensing or observing, while 'realize' focuses on the process of becoming aware of or comprehending something, often with a sense of sudden understanding or revelation.

Difference in Emphasis

'Realize' refers to the state of suddenly becoming aware or conscious of something that you may not have recognized or understood before. It refers to a mental awareness that results from dealing with information input from the environment. 'Perceive', on the other hand, emphasizes the act of becoming aware of or noticing something through the senses. It involves the process of observing or sensing something physical. Here are some examples:

When she saw the final exam questions, she realized she hadn't studied the right material.

'Realize' emphasizes a sudden awareness through mental processes.

'Perceive' is often used to emphasize involvement of sense in coming to an awareness.
