Encourage vs. Inspire

These verbs are closely related but they differ in the kind of emotion of state they create in a person. This lesson will clarify their difference.

What is the difference between 'encourage' and 'inspire'?

Both 'encourage' and 'inspire' are concerned with giving someone confidence and hope to do something. However, 'inspire' means not only to give someone the confidence to do something, but also make them eager and enthusiastic about it. This lesson will discuss the difference between these two verbs.

Confidence vs. Enthusiasm

'Encourage' means to provide support, motivation, or positive reinforcement to someone, boosting their confidence or belief in their abilities. It involves giving someone the courage, reassurance, or approval they need to take action or overcome challenges. 'Inspire' often goes beyond encouragement and creates a strong feeling of enthusiasm, motivation, or eagerness to do something. It might involve setting an example, sharing personal experiences, or embodying qualities that motivate others to pursue their own goals. Take a look at some examples:

He encouraged his friend to pursue her dreams by expressing belief in her abilities.

He inspired his friend to pursue her dreams by recounting his own story of reaching his dreams.

He was the one who encouraged me to apply for the job in the first place.

The achievements of the Olympic athletes inspire young athletes around the world.

His story of overcoming adversity inspired many people over the years.
