Mix vs. Blend
Both 'mix' and 'blend' are concerned with combining different materials together to form a new material. However, 'blend' is more specific and is used when talking about combining substances to achieve a single smooth material. This lesson will clarify this difference.
Difference in Scope
'Mix' can be used to talk about combining solid or liquid substances or materials so that they cannot be separated easily. It often involves combining the material by stirring them but does not involve chopping or cutting the material. 'Blend' also involves combining two or more substances, elements, or ingredients together but it also involves cutting the material into small pieces to achieve a more thorough and harmonious combination of the components, resulting in a smoother final product compared to the result of 'mixing'. It often suggests a consistent or balanced result without distinct separations.
Mix the oil and vinegar in a salad dressing to create a tangy flavor.
She mixed the red and blue paint to create a purple color.
She blended the fresh fruits with yoghurt to make a smoothie.
'Blending' involves cutting the fruit to small pieces while 'mixing' would suggest they were merely stirred with the yoghurt and remain in large pieces.
Blend the butter and sugar until they become light and fluffy.
