Cloths vs. Clothes

I know they differ in only one letter, but I think it's better we discuss them cause they might become confusing sometimes.

"Cloths" vs. "Clothes" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both of these words refer to clothes and what we wear. However, 'clothes' refers to the different items we wear like trousers, shirts, hats, etc. whereas, 'cloths' refers to the fabric of which clothes are made.

Differences

'Cloth' is the fabric that we use to make clothes, table cloths, etc. Look:

She is one of those tailors that buy expensive cloths for tailoring.

We sell special kinds of cloths.

'Clothes' are the different items we wear like pants, jeans, coats, hats, shoes, etc. Look at the following examples for moe clarification:

You cannot wear any kinds of clothes you want everywhere. Every place has its own dress code.

In fact, you have to wear showy clothes for tonight's party.

Similarities

Their similarity is that both of them refer to materials we use to wear. Check out the following examples for more understanding:

Could you hand me that piece of cloth?

She has bought a lot of gothic style clothes for herself.

Are They Interchangeable?

Although both of these words refer to the same material, they cannot be used interchangeably, because, one refers to the material, whereas, the other one refers to the clothing items. Compare:

✓ Isn't she tired of always wearing black clothes?

X Isn't she tired of always wearing black cloths?

Here, we can have black cloths, but we cannot wear them. We can make clothing materials out of them.
